The origin story episode

Faster Horses Season 3 Episode 6

Like every good superhero, they have an origin story. Faster Horses Podcast is no different, in this special episode we talk about the name of our podcast and that famous quote (somewhat dubiously) attributed to Henry Ford: “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.

What does this mean for user experience? We talk about the meaning behind the quote and why talking to your customers really matters.

Also, find out if Patrick Stewart is really a shit and what's in Mark Wheeler's suitcase this week.

01:27.20 | faster_horses | Ah, um, it's good.
01:28.15 | Nick | You got you got like a double bed and a a bee deer in the bathroom and then in the middle of the room the Crown Jewels but.
01:34.48 | Mark | Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's it. That's it. That's in the yeah in the top suite The rest of them just have what are they called then.
01:37.77 | faster_horses | Um, yeah, they hate it. Oh sorry mark.
01:45.13 | Nick | Um, but put your sells off.
01:51.57 | Mark | With those signature foot. Yeah there we go there. We.
01:51.62 | faster_horses | Out stocks? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, Nick just do me a favor just mute your mic and still talk and wonder if we can start yeah because i'm.
01:55.89 | Nick | Um, yeah. Um, I That's weird and' I.
02:09.69 | faster_horses | Thinking It's not come from your mic I don't know it you next just if you click on your and my God muted you know I can't unmute you.
02:12.57 | Nick | Um, why does it do that right? Let me let let me drop and come back in.
02:28.90 | faster_horses | Um, was just trying to see ah I Ah don't know how can un meet you now. Yeah, you might have to drop and come back in. Yeah, still a bit quiet.
02:43.58 | Nick | You can hear me now still quiet. What the fuck man right now Stupid fucking thing. It were fine when we were talking.
02:54.14 | faster_horses | Ah, yeah, yeah I think he changed the sentence. Ah.
03:14.11 | faster_horses | How's everything else. Mark.
03:14.62 | Mark | Fine. Yeah yeah, not much but work going on at the minute I was staying at um sendnicks Yesterday. Yeah, that was nice. Stayed on thursday friday and came back Yesterday. So.
03:21.81 | faster_horses | Ah, nice cool. Did you get to have a ride on his e-bike. Ah.
03:32.40 | Mark | Ah, develop in the end but we were playing death loop together. Yeah yeah, me james came over on Saturday as well. So we're playing that 1 way death loops. It is.
03:37.52 | faster_horses | Oh yeah, yeah, is it good.
03:44.87 | faster_horses | Nice down slopes.
00:00.56 | Nick | And.
03:50.39 | Mark | It's good I would call it a um 10 out of 10 I give it 8 out of 10 But um, it's a good game. The ui is a lot of crap but the the rest of it's okay.
03:53.71 | faster_horses | all right? that's all right ah yeah what was I oh yes, I was um, playing the battlefield twenty forty 2 open world beer. Babel um, on Wednesday and I thought there was some kind of like light some really tiny and it kind of like I've got a pretty big tv and like I kind of like. Struggle to read what it said in the midst of like a massive battle and kind light and it's like a tiny clay symbol and then revive and it's kind of like so hard to read and like why why would you even do that. Kind of like maybe you know if you'd know then it's attrusive trip. But I dont yeah, it's just weird, but it's pretty buggy. Yeah yeah.
00:00.00 | Nick | Are.
05:02.77 | Mark | Well it is a baser but I know um nick was telling me that death Strandy had to release it update to do to upscale some of the text for exactly the same reason you go? Yeah, yeah, that's your back.
05:09.72 | faster_horses | Four. Yeah yeah, or yeah, yeah, get back back.
00:19.83 | Nick | Yeah, as part of the oh that's much louder in it. Jesus as part of the um and I'm just looking at my levels is that better. Yeah, as part of the director's cut that they brought out on p s five 1 of the updates that the added was.
05:23.79 | Mark | Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:24.93 | faster_horses | Ah, oh it's still a bit.
00:39.20 | Nick | Being a selected year tech size for the menus and stuff because on on the original they were like legitimately ridiculous. It's like a fucking marks brothers sketch.
05:35.36 | faster_horses | Ah.
05:40.44 | Mark | I'm afraid my mother's calling I'm just gonna have to answer me mother manner. Hello.
05:42.91 | faster_horses | Oh ah, although Nick you still a bit loud. Yeah yeah, just um.
00:57.45 | Nick | Bit loud.
05:59.18 | faster_horses | Yeah, that's better. Yeah, you just if you look at. Can you see the levels on the recording. Yeah yeah, when yeah when they squared off, you're a bit loud I think.
01:04.30 | Nick | That that that all right right? Yeah, yeah, yeah, do they want to be like somewhere in the middle rather than touching the edges yours is doing that.
06:18.49 | faster_horses | Most of it there. Yeah I think when you kind of like you're just touching the edges. That's all right? But um yeah, when it when it's constantly clipping that. Yeah, that means you're a bit loud but it's good.
01:27.96 | Nick | Yeah, all right? Okay, all written right? Okay, okay I have been told that before.
06:35.62 | faster_horses | Nice cool. The back we ordered someday lunch now. Oh right? nice.
06:45.86 | Mark | Ah, no, no and chris had apparently ordered Sunday lunch and made some kind of arrangement with Mom he is now not answering his phone and I have no idea of what this plan is meant to be so you know.
06:57.34 | faster_horses | The ah is' that classic. Nice let's go open.
02:01.84 | Nick | But not told you.
07:05.50 | Mark | Standard fare really.
02:13.36 | Nick | Right? Should we should we go then.
07:10.39 | Mark | Yeah, yeah.
07:14.50 | faster_horses | Seriously alexa announce Why you're announcing that in the middle of a bloody everywhere announcing there. You go Love. Deliver The bullies everywhere.
07:38.23 | faster_horses | Alexa Announce Prick announcing.
02:42.37 | Nick | Ah, right.
02:54.40 | Nick | Ah, but let's record this before my fucking ceiling falls on the ultimate right right? Who's who's doing it would someone go.
07:50.59 | Mark | Um, ah now. Yeah, yeah, we're away.
07:52.16 | faster_horses | It's recorded. Yeah ah make Nick I think it's um, this is mainly your topic. So let's um, straight foot.
08:05.28 | Mark | Yeah, yeah.
08:05.64 | faster_horses | From the Horse's mouth.
03:11.12 | Nick | It's all how rode how rode? Ah yeah, so it's all of us topic because the topic is faster horses and the reason for that is because a lot of people. A lot of listeners and a lot of people who are aware of the show. Ask the either ask what faster horses means in general or I've heard people kind of explain what faster horses means but not quite hit. The reason for why I suggested it as a name so to give people like a bit of background on it faster horses refers to a quote that's not really a quote that was attributed to henry ford of of the ford motor company. The original creator of the ford motor company. And he said something along the lines of if I'd have asked people what they wanted they would have asked for faster horses. So first and foremost I think it's it's understood that he never actually said that right it was. It's like been misattributeed. Maybe just made up but he's the 1 who's um.
09:17.69 | Mark | So it's a bit like that Abraham blinquin core in it don't trust everything you read on the internet. It is 1 of my favorites of his.
04:24.89 | Nick | Who's now like the the owner of that quote whenever anyone mentions it.
04:36.44 | Nick | Ah, yeah, he was a it was a wise man he was before his time. Yeah, um.
09:32.86 | faster_horses | Ah, the the pioneers here. Ah and it ties nicely and it's part kind of like innovation people talk about it in innovation and and it's part in user research as well. So.
04:49.45 | Nick | Yeah.
09:51.21 | faster_horses | And I think a lot people use it in my experience when they don't want to do useries. But.
05:03.20 | Nick | Yeah, so part. A lot of the reason we've signed I've got so much to say about it now is because it's been coming up a lot in various conversations just by coincidence. Really um and a lot of people talking about it and I think. Maybe we'll get into that conversation in a minute but I think the original reason we wanted to talk about faster horses is to explain why we called our ux um podcast Faster horses. So the understanding by some people is that if you if you if you use the faster horses quote what you're actually doing is. Tout in your abilities as a designer and kind of downplaying ux and and saying that well I don't believe in ux because I've been a designer for however, long and I know what's best. So it seems unusual then to call the ux sure.
10:36.85 | Mark | Um.
05:57.72 | Nick | Faster horses and the reason I suggested it in the first place is that we we are the faster horses. It's a bit of a fuck you to people who use that quote. Basically so so my my point is that? Yeah, if you ask people what they want they will say.
11:00.60 | faster_horses | Ah, tell me.
06:16.22 | Nick | Faster horses. But actually that's not the end of the court shouldn't be the end of the conversation. That's the start of the conversation because as a Ux designer you understand that those people who you're asking that use your product don't necessarily have the vocabulary the need to ask for what they want specifically.
11:13.80 | Mark | Um, exactly yeah.
06:35.79 | Nick | And they're just using the vocabulary they have to allude to what they want so a good designer would have heard I want a faster horse and thought right these people want these people want a faster horse. But why do they want a faster horse. Well do they want to go a shorter distance more quickly. They want. Um, the horse to be more efficient and then you know you start to ask more questions then but they want a more comfortable ride. They want something that's um, you can just get in and go with like you know there's a lot of a lot of affordances that come from just asking basic questions so to just say. I know what's better for these people and I created a car is is 1 it's arrogant I guess and it's showing a complete lack of understanding and appreciation for ux. So yeah, the reason I suggested that we call ourselves faster horses is that. Where all right? we're we're going to embrace that court and we're going to be the faster horses because because it's yeah, there's there's a yeah, well, that's it yeah and you know it made a good it made a good image in the first place as well. The original artwork for this show was paul in the Ford model t.
12:33.10 | faster_horses | But we we like irony as well. That's a another point.
12:35.84 | Mark | Um.
12:44.16 | Mark | Um.
07:52.52 | Nick | Poming it down a dirt track with a horse in the side in the side seat shitting its pants. Um, yeah.
12:49.43 | Mark | Ah, um, still 1 of my favorites that at Paw horse. Yeah.
12:49.63 | faster_horses | Ah, that's there that happens in my yeah driving every day.
08:03.44 | Nick | Ah, usually the horse comes in through the windscreen. So yeah, so that's that's the reason I suggested it and I don't I Never really explained that to you guys. But I think it was understood but usually on the same sort of page is toify that so we all understood what the quote.
13:00.10 | faster_horses | Um, yeah, yeah, yeah I yeah.
13:16.50 | faster_horses | Yeah, yeah, like I think it's quite interesting because I think a lot of that's happening now because with electric vehicles a lot of car companies are going Well everybody just wants the same car.
08:21.80 | Nick | But how people use that court and how it's misunderstood. Um, so yeah, we sort of embraced it.
08:38.20 | Nick | Um, yeah.
13:34.27 | faster_horses | But instead of having petrol or diesel. They want an electric motor but that's actuallyly not the case because they um and I think I tweeted about this earlier and the week at paul wilshore um, its little selfplug um and and actually when they.
13:45.56 | Mark | Um, but.
13:53.39 | faster_horses | Ah, spoke to like 1415 year olds to the next generation of car drivers what they want is the technology in the cars. They don't want the same. You know, kind of gearboxy kind of feel. They don't want the same controls. You know and kind of all those buttons on the dashboard and things like that are irrelevant to a lot of people you know and especially if you can do things with tech I mean you know why do we even have indicators because really you know if you're turning the car should. Automatically indicate and you know, kind of if you're following a map that's built into your car system and it knows you're going to take a direction. Why isn't the car automatically indicating and going on now. Why is that extra stick. Ah, you know and I I talk about you know we talk about cars. But this relates to user interface and why put a stick on there to indicate when actually you know that you're making a decision there for people not to indicate over.
15:01.91 | Mark | From slow.
15:05.43 | faster_horses | Kind of like doing it automatically for you can and you see can I and it like drivers piss me off when they don't indicate and they just turn we can lay out I was following someone yesterday and they went in the left hand lane on a roundabout to right? Um, and if you're in America roundabout. So this middle thing. Ah, that you kind of go around with no traffic lights. Ah, it's a real weird english concept that you you kind of have to be polite and give way to let people cover. It's like ah, but yeah and you get like really dickhead drivers. Ah.
15:29.93 | Mark | Listen.
10:39.97 | Nick | Um, yeah.
15:42.83 | faster_horses | And ah, we had this conversation as well. Nick that you know ah cars with ai and self-driving capabilities you know could safely drive on the roads themselves. But the problem we have at the minute is that so many cars don't have that. Capability on and you rely on humans to make mistakes and then you have to program all those mistakes into the car to to kind of put it in and and kind of like that's where some of the you know automatic driving falls down because you have dickheads.
11:20.81 | Nick | Yeah, yeah, yeah that that that technology is ready to go now and has been for years. The issue The the thing that they're trying to work through and the thing that's throwing a spanner into works is everyone who doesn't have.
16:19.86 | faster_horses | Ah, the so yeah yeah.
16:34.25 | Mark | Yeah.
11:39.32 | Nick | An autonomous car which is basically a human being so the other drivers on the road are the reason for self-driving cars not working because they all speak to each other. They all know what they're going to do and are doing at all times and where they are in relation to each other. It's it's the people who.
16:43.79 | faster_horses | Yeah, yeah.
11:58.32 | Nick | Miss their turning on the motorway and decide to bomb through 3 lanes of traffic drive over the stripes and and end up on their turning rather than just got ten minutes out of their way and come back down the other way that more were yeah um, and.
16:56.60 | faster_horses | We have that.
17:03.90 | faster_horses | Ah, yeah, definitely. And yeah, and yeah and going back to the quote you know, kind of like I think you know when when you say oh well if we just asked. Did they just want faster horses or faster website or better ui and um. You know I think when you if you ask like a basic question and kind of like go to somebody oh to on a website what kind of website you do want and like ten years ago everybody said bbc ah you know nowadays everybody says ah 1 day.
17:36.38 | Mark | Approval.
17:42.95 | faster_horses | The same as kind of my biggest competitors so you know or want it like Apple or I want it like Google or you know I want to and I want to just copy this and that's exactly the same as this quote really isn't it. It's kind of discussed.
13:00.43 | Nick | Yeah, it's like going back to the indicator thing. It's like oh so we've made the indicators stalks more ergonomic for your hands or oh you know they'd say you know do do you like? Ah, How do you think the indicator stock should look or feel. And that's a loaded question in it because you've not even suggested the idea that you don't have to have indicator stocks at all and people people don't don't understand what the parameters are for the answer.
18:19.47 | faster_horses | Um, yeah, yeah.
18:19.80 | Mark | Yeah.
13:35.25 | Nick | So how do you want to? and so if they said how you know how would you expect to indicate in this car. You'd be like oh well, there'd be a sta somewhere and I'd move it and they wouldn't understand that technology is advanced to the point now where if the map if you've put in the map where you go in it knows where you go in it knows where the turtain is it knows what the safe distance from the turn is before you action. The.
18:48.50 | faster_horses | Do.
13:55.12 | Nick | Indicator you're not just doing it at the last minute or you're not doing it like 2 miles down the road people don't know that so they don't ask for it. They ask for something within their experience of the world and it's up to you as a designer to figure out the best way of achieving that emotional need through.
19:05.47 | faster_horses | Dare you.
14:14.53 | Nick | Through whatever you can come up with and then you test it and see how they feel about it so like getting into like the the nitty gritty of where this has come up recently you know of been having conversations with designers or friends might have been having conversations with designers where.
19:11.41 | Mark | Yeah, me, yeah.
19:13.64 | faster_horses | Definitely.
14:32.26 | Nick | Kind of created something and in order in order to kind of justify the design decisions I've made or in order to justify doing things the way they've always done them. They've said well Henry Ford said.
19:40.92 | Mark | Rather.
14:49.11 | Nick | Ah, if I've asked people what they wanted. They'd have asked for faster horses and justifying that to me feels a little bit like saying I feed my baby steak because if I gave him what he asked for I'd just be feeding him. Wow.
19:59.18 | faster_horses | Ah, love it. A yeah.
19:59.60 | Mark | Um, yeah, yeah.
15:07.27 | Nick | You completely like the the baby the baby doesn't have the capability to ask for what it Needs. It's up to you to interpret what it's asking for and and you know they're always doing it the really funny thing about it is they're always doing it. They're always making that um, making that comparison when the churning out. You bog standard website that they've been churning out for the past 1015 years the quote points to like a revolutionary change in not only like getting around but the invention of like the assembly line as well. That was a really revolutionary thing Henry four didn't involve invent the motor car.
20:23.29 | Mark | And.
20:34.63 | faster_horses | Um, yeah, yeah.
15:45.90 | Nick | Invented the and the assembly line and he made mass production motor cars. So you know misunderstanding the quote on 2 levels there and and by checking out a website with no affordance for good Usability is in no way the same as inventing or manufacturing the motor car and replacing the horse.
20:57.63 | faster_horses | Yeah, and I think as well that you know when you're talking to users of any anything you know is depends on kind of the background of that user you're asking as well. So if you're going to ask a ah dot.
16:05.21 | Nick | it's it's it's 2 completely different things.
21:16.92 | faster_horses | Ah, ah, what kind of website they're going to use that will be different than if you're going to ask a lawyer kind of the website if you're going to ask a ceo if you're going to ask somebody who's very technical. They're going to use different things and they're going to have different. Background experiences to you know, bring to the table so you know and going back to the quote you know if you ask um you know twenty Cowboys what car they want to drive. They're going to tell you who they want a lovely. You know stallion horse to drive. Um, you know, ah and all those all those things and if you're going to ask the right people the right questions and I think you know, kind of talk about unconscious bias and this is 1 of my problems as well with personas and people. You know anybody who asks for personas I question the motive and kind of why' do you want a persona because it tells you about the general audience or things like that and you know if you talk about kind of like oh we're going to pitch it to a ceo um, and. You know a ceo of a small business is probably the hr person. It's probably the website build. It's the Chief technology officer. It's the person who deals with the emails booking schedules. They do everything. Compared to a ceo of like a massive company which they'll be very hands off and they'll be very strategy based so you can't just say oh this is a ceo they'd like to watch bbc 1 at night time and things like that because it just doesn't. Work like that and people are very very different and because you know our we and I think our media's so much wider nowadays you know we just can't pigeonhole people into these personas and just say kind of like you know? oh we've got to target ceos because like. What what is a ceo kind of what are you going for? You know you're talking to a huge range of people just in that 1 sentence. Oh yes, yeah yeah, that was.
18:39.48 | Nick | Did you see that persona thing that I sent to the group chat they were there and it's like has facial hair lives where it's called has a nautil list and then there's a picture of and and stalin.
23:42.61 | Mark | Oh yep.
23:42.70 | faster_horses | Ah, yeah, yeah, there's there's a few of those and and go like they' they're brilliant. Um, they go like there's um, there's another 1 isn't that with Satan and someone else um, kind ofer.
23:53.20 | Mark | Since since.
18:58.80 | Nick | Yes, great.
24:01.20 | faster_horses | Ah, yeah, yeah I mean definitely definitely I Think it's and it's it might be my design thinking book over there after dick out I'll find them.
19:07.30 | Nick | Asked think of out I've only seen that 1 but I'll have to find the rest I'm sure the part of the biggest bigger set are they.
24:16.69 | faster_horses | Ah, post someone the social 1 we when we promote this episode Mark what's your experience is you've been a bit quiet.
24:21.93 | Mark | I have yeah yeah I've been trying a couple of terms to get gene on there but it sounds like you 2 hands quite a lot you wanted to to say first. So I thought ah ah well, ah you know I'll have my little time in the limelight first and then I'll get back in me box. Um, but um.
19:39.30 | Nick | I've got more.
24:41.58 | Mark | 1 thing I wanted to say was kind of a reflection of what nick was saying about the context in which this court is used because it's as you pointed out. It's used and whereas specifically when a company doesn't want to innovate doesn't want to change which is so even though the court. Isn't actually from Henry ford It's so counter to that quote that it's almost like parody of a parody. Um, but I think in the space where people are trying to innovate. Um and this this excuse is flung out there to kind of defend people just doing whatever they want. Failing to recognize that innovation needs to be tempered and it needs to be tempered by a sense of accountability and a sense of responsibility and I think that's something that is so often missed when you focus on ideas like this about just going off out there because you might innovate, you might. Living your room for a month and design something. Um, but if you're part of a wider business and you're you're trying to innovate their range of products and if you do so within that little box a like little echoco chamber you're only ever inevit but going to serve your own need and your. Not the same customer base as um, what your company is serving so really, you need to be held held to account to that and the only real way to do that and that it was a real way to have any kind of integrity to your design is to actually speak to people. And to be able to interpret what they want. Um, yeah I really really like that that statement you said about I feed my baby stick because if I listen to it I'd be feeding him while that's aroka. Genius that. Um, and again a lot of when you're in a user interview your interviewees are trying to be helpful. They're trying to frame the.
21:51.71 | Nick | Yeah.
26:50.80 | Mark | Problems in a way that make them sound like solutions because they don't want to come across as whiny little pricks most of the time and you have to kind of assure them that no, that's precisely the kind of person they have to be um, but still, they'll solutionize for you Especially if you're asking questions like.
22:01.47 | Nick | She fifty.
27:08.72 | Mark | So what do you want? you know.
27:09.54 | faster_horses | Yeah, yeah, yeah.
22:14.59 | Nick | Yeah, well, that's the thing That's the that's the main problem with that quote is if I ask people what they want. We're asking a wrong question and ah yeah, what? What? Yeah, what do you? Yeah, what do you want? Well you know like narrow it down a little bit or give us.
27:20.49 | faster_horses | Biscuits.
27:21.24 | Mark | That's it.
27:24.87 | faster_horses | There? yeah.
27:26.32 | Mark | It? Yeah yeah, yeah in in what context, you know what other constraints. Um, there are so many people so many times. Um.
22:34.18 | Nick | Give us some cards to sort or you don't mean yeah.
27:40.37 | Mark | I've I've been asked a question like that and I've not known the answer because I'm not the expert on this So I have to you give something flimsy such as I want to go faster I want it to be easier because the question is too open. Um.
27:44.86 | faster_horses | Yeah, you.
27:56.81 | Mark | And then on the on the comversece side. You get the questions that are too leading as you mentioned and they'll lead to exactly the same problem. They lead to the the situation where um, you're you're asking So how fast do you want this horse to be before you've even prerequisiteed whether the horse is involved. Um.
23:05.22 | Nick | Um, yeah, yeah.
28:10.39 | faster_horses | Yeah, twice as.
28:16.23 | Mark | And that then the user has to if the user and some do do this and you have to get a particularly ballsy individual who turns around and says well I don't really want to harse at all. Um.
28:26.47 | faster_horses | Me.
23:33.39 | Nick | Yeah, that's the thing it takes quite a brave person to say to the Horse farmer that they don't want a horse.
28:35.41 | faster_horses | Yeah, yeah, yeah, totally.
28:36.80 | Mark | Yeah, um, not to mention the fact that the person conducting the interview is going off the Persona data. They've probably generated with so the Stalin andantra list are specifically going to go after people who do want horses.
28:53.48 | faster_horses | A.
28:55.61 | Mark | As opposed to testing people who won't lie outside the current scope.
24:00.90 | Nick | Um, yeah.
28:59.29 | faster_horses | Yeah, definitely I think I think as well you touched on a really good point there mark that you know, kind of it does depend on who you talk to. But also you know, kind of like the way you get feedback. You know is. And and we all do it. Don't we like you know do do people leave good reviews anymore very rarely unless you get exceptional service. You don't leave a good review. Yeah yeah.
24:38.78 | Nick | It's all all good reviews seem to be about service not about the product anymore.
29:35.95 | Mark | I agree. Yeah.
29:38.60 | faster_horses | Yeah, yeah, exactly and you know and kind of like things like that and it has to be really really good to leave positive feedback for anything but it's so much easier to leave negative feedback for stuff and for products and and you know anything out there. You'll give um I'm really bad at this because I if I hate something I'll give it 3 stars. Um I just because kind of like I don't want to ruin someone's entire business. Um, and then you know the other thing is you you can't give like. Zero stars to something as well. You you've got to give it at least 1 star so you've got to think it's at least you know twenty percent good so so yeah um and like.
30:17.36 | Mark | Um, the.
25:22.93 | Nick | Yeah, yeah.
30:24.97 | Mark | At least comment worthy. Yeah.
25:30.87 | Nick | Yeah.
30:33.41 | faster_horses | You know that that whole scale of rating and and things like that though, the way we ask, an nps is ah is a very good kind of metric on that and and ah, what a lot of people don't realize is the what on Nps so you only get positive if you. Rate something is it nine out of 10 you become kind of like a neutral from 5 to 8 and then below that you're Negative. So if someone it gives you you know, kind of like they could just have like a. Bad day or they could just be frustrated with something they could have a slow internet. You know that might not be the full of you as a provider your website or anything like that could just be something wrong with their technology. You know their computer might have had to reboot or. They've had to do an update at the longest. The wrongest time i' know. Yeah you know why? I the wrongest time the worst time and all those factors come into it and kind of like you know to give somebody it can like an mious rate and it's so.
31:31.55 | Mark | Um, wrong guess wrong guess.
26:37.73 | Nick | The wrongest time.
31:49.32 | faster_horses | So true and then then there's kind of like all do youx ah techniques to kind of force you to kind of give a better rating or kind of like you know the amount of times if you you have somebody around to fix your boiler or something like that and they say like oh if you rate me then you know. Ah, it affects my job. Yeah, So if you kind of give a bad rating to someone even though it's kind like shifts and you know they didn't do what you wanted them to do. You wouldn't give them a bad rating because they've put that emotional pressure on you to kind of like say oh this is this is Amazing. Ah. I Like I think Sky Engineers do it. Um all the time and they kind of say. Yeah yeah, yeah, with a pair of pliers see how like go if you don't I'll cut the bloody yeah cable to the satellite dish.
32:33.63 | Mark | Um, yeah.
27:39.96 | Nick | Wellsa stood there with a hammer in the hand like can you write my service please. Ah.
32:47.48 | faster_horses | You know and it's kind of like well you know you're a nice guy. So why? whatever? But you know you put the bloody satellite dish on Muroom door. So what the fuck. Yeah.
32:55.15 | Mark | Um, yeah.
28:00.60 | Nick | Yeah, well Also you've not a chance to check to see if the sky dishes actually working yet because it's still there. In fact, do you do you even have satellite dishes for sky anymore or are you just really old.
33:05.68 | faster_horses | Well um, you do you do, but they announced this week didn't they skyglass which is a really interesting concept that they're doing. Yeah, they're doing tvs ah basically like mobile contracts.
33:08.42 | Mark | Are.
28:21.60 | Nick | Sky glass.
33:24.30 | faster_horses | So you get the Tv you get your sky contract. You don't need a satellite dish. It's all in the Tv all through wi-fi so they go kill off loads of those engineers jobs about yeah yeah.
28:29.36 | Nick | Ah, f.
28:40.56 | Nick | Are they good? Are they good tvs.
33:38.23 | Mark | Carwell.
33:39.48 | faster_horses | Ah, got dovis and do yeah Mar Sin and things like that and you can get them in different colors and different sizes and it's yeah yeah, oh and but ah while you're at it sign up for squarespace website.
33:43.94 | Mark | So so after and that's that's a word from our sponsor um sky toverse. Yeah, yeah, you know.
28:55.23 | Nick | Ah.
33:59.22 | faster_horses | And Harry's raisin blades are they okay but.
29:05.58 | Nick | Ah, yeah, so I want to I want to try actually doing some ads. Maybe we can introduce them on the Patreon like first test pilot I'm on the test on the patreon and see.
34:04.46 | faster_horses | Yeah.
34:15.10 | faster_horses | Definitely and I did want to also add as well about the I want to link it back to that Patreon episode the Ux Files we did about occupied time and you brought up a good article there Nick about.
29:21.90 | Nick | If they are well they go down. But yeah I think we should to.
29:31.77 | Nick | Yeah, yeah I was.
34:32.58 | faster_horses | Houston airport and they had loads and loads of complaints about waiting for baggage to come off and the way they sold. It wasn't a solution to get baggage quicker to them. They made that waiting time feel occupied by putting the bags further away.
29:40.90 | Nick | Yeah.
34:51.67 | faster_horses | From where they came off the plane so they didn't have the oh no. So yeah, yeah, but oh the well I will.
29:57.79 | Nick | Oh you giving you giving the game away. You're giving the content of the ah you giving the Patreon content to way there.
34:57.19 | Mark | Yeah, that's it Our listeners will now not have to sign up to Patreon which is at Ww wwwe Ww dot for Patreon Dot Com Forward Slash faster horses.
35:05.80 | faster_horses | Nice while the will to get the context and and the fun and hilarity that goes with it.
30:11.95 | Nick | Nice Actually I think it might be faster horses you ex I think I'm not I'm not actually entirely sure I should probably know that.
35:14.10 | Mark | Um, at faster horses ux no 1 ne's typing in the ui ah url directly on the unless they're clinically insane. They're just going to google and typing in faster horses pet tune.
35:15.80 | faster_horses | Are.
35:22.82 | faster_horses | Yeah, yeah, if you're watching on Youtube scan that qr code there. Yeah, that's what we do? yeah.
30:28.72 | Nick | Um, yeah, yeah, bing.
35:29.79 | Mark | Scan that qr code. Oh.
30:40.56 | Nick | Yeah, well, that's that's been 1 benefit of the pandemic isn't it. The person who invented the qr code is now a billionaire.
35:44.54 | Mark | That's yeah, yeah, good for him I said or her. Yeah.
35:45.80 | faster_horses | Ah, they yeah they gone.
30:50.80 | Nick | Yeah, oh ah, her right? So 1 thing that I wanted to get in this episode was so having come from a background of where I was the person who would be likely to say if. If henry ford would asked people what they want to do would have asked for faster horses. It's quite as that person. It's quite a good quote to use and a lot of people I think would just be like shit's got me there and wouldn't know how to combat it so I thought we could or thought I could. Um, offer a bit of advice of like how a combat that as ah as a response and there's a couple of ways. There's a couple of things that I've been thinking about I've had I've had time to think about it and in my head. Um I've gone. Yeah, but you know you know you have an argument with someone and then half an hour later you think of the perfect comeback and you're like shake. Yeah, exactly? Yeah so I was I was hoping we could do a little bit of role play.
36:39.50 | Mark | Um, yeah, the the only reason to invent a time machine now.
36:39.91 | faster_horses | Ah, ah yeah.
31:56.23 | Nick | And paul seen as though you're the only person here who drives I was I'm going to pick on you to be so you're the guy you're the designer who's been churning out websites for the past 20 years with no with no consideration for youx and where we in a meeting you've you you.
36:55.31 | faster_horses | Okay, so so and but I've been pinholed. Ah.
37:01.60 | Mark | Um, yeah, and.
32:15.27 | Nick | You've you've just designed me. You've just designed me something like an interface or something like that an app. Let's say an app like a a shopping app. Yeah a shopping app. So so we're in a meeting and I'm just giving some feedback and you're gonna you've got a really lean into this role. Okay, so I Paul. Thanks.
37:12.67 | faster_horses | Okay, yeah, yeah, okay, let's yeah, a mobile app. Yeah yeah.
37:24.54 | faster_horses | Um, up So right.
32:34.49 | Nick | Thanks for thanks for your time today. So um, I've just been looking at the the app you've submitted for the for the shopping basket. Um I don't I don't think it's very good I don't think you've really considered the end user have you have you done any user testing.
37:41.10 | faster_horses | Well, Ah, well if you look around kind of like it's just you know this is what all the websites are doing So you know if you don't meet up with the demand then you know you're not going to get into this.
33:02.29 | Nick | Um, ah yeah, is there any is it is there any kind of specific quote. You'd like to reference in order to block up you ah which are.
38:02.60 | Mark | Um, oh that was brilliant.
38:03.19 | faster_horses | Ah I was I was going to build up to that I kind of like didn but I was to yeah I.
33:19.62 | Nick | Told you I was going to do this before the episode and.
38:19.73 | Mark | I'm definitely putting that on my interview questions list. Is there a quote you'd like to choose to back up your statement.
33:25.37 | Nick | Um.
38:24.59 | faster_horses | Ah.
33:31.20 | Nick | Are.
38:29.23 | faster_horses | Ah, ah well Nick you know, kind of like you come to me, you know and I'm really innovative and um, you know if you really ask your users. They're going to say they just want faster horses but really. You want to make a motor car.
33:52.55 | Nick | Oh that's the famous quote by Henry Ford of Ford or a motif company isn't it all right? Okay, yeah, he did. Yeah I've I've got a time machine I invented after an argument and I've been back to check? Um, so so let me let me ask you let me ask.
38:50.74 | faster_horses | Yeah, who hundred percent said that. But yeah, yeah, oh by you there get me a dinosaur.
38:53.25 | Mark | Um, since yeah I.
39:07.14 | faster_horses | I Do I know I tesla. Ah.
34:12.10 | Nick | Let me ask you this poll. Ah D drive all right? Okay, so you do you drive a Ford Oh oh what? what car do you drive? Oh ah.
39:17.37 | Mark | Um, ah oh spicy.
39:23.40 | faster_horses | Ah, if I knew I wouldn't be designing websites. But.
34:27.53 | Nick | So what the fuck are you talking about then.
34:33.34 | Nick | So so just just just by asking someone if ah if they drive and and just naturally assuming that because of use that quote they obviously drive afford if they don't then you simply say well that's ah, that's user experience. You've decided that ford.
39:33.16 | faster_horses | Is. Yeah, yeah.
39:39.50 | Mark | Um, yeah.
39:44.95 | Mark | Um, yeah.
34:53.13 | Nick | And offering the user experience that you want and you've gone with a different car manufacturer because if that quote was valid at all everyone on Earth would drive fords and there would be no other car companies because that's how Usability and by extension Capitalism works.
39:51.40 | faster_horses | Yep.
39:55.32 | Mark | Um, also.
39:56.12 | faster_horses | True now now.
40:06.14 | faster_horses | Oh do do take 2 take to go nick will give.
35:10.27 | Nick | Sorry, not Usability user experience. Oh had to been great if iin' a fuck el at the end. So but yeah, um, and and you know that's it in a nutshell and it there's you've made a choice there to not to not drive a ford.
40:07.10 | Mark | No I think it's.
40:18.34 | faster_horses | There Yeah because it's not a bloody faster horse. It's a very shitty slow horse. Yeah.
35:28.20 | Nick | Because yeah, but but also also Ford now do user testing.
40:29.82 | faster_horses | Yeah, yeah, yeah, it interestingly as well. Ford ironically used the this quote a name make mustang mustang brand yeah cars.
40:44.49 | Mark | Um, um, so but yeah, it's technically a faster horse in and of itself.
35:51.53 | Nick | Mustangs. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's kind of a nod to it in it.
40:47.71 | faster_horses | And you know which features is a horse and kind of for for our redo as well. Yeah, and kind of like yeah yeah, and yeah, and if you ask Persia drivers they'd want faster tigers or lions is it lions.
41:01.76 | Mark | Um, I thought now.
36:09.23 | Nick | Put persios isn't that a cat isn't a cat isn't there a cat called a Persia or put a poojo as it's pronounced america.
41:06.29 | faster_horses | Yeah, yeah, possibly to poojo.
41:09.80 | Mark | I don't drive and my interesting cars extend to the fact that they can convey me where they are going and I'm not the 1 driving them. So that's it. Yep yeah yeah.
36:24.32 | Nick | Specifically so.
41:23.30 | faster_horses | Ah see. Yeah, yeah, that is that is the future and look I keep it there. Yeah yeah, yeah, and and this this is as well kind of 1 1 of the points and that kind of like that you know and back to the electric.
36:31.59 | Nick | That's the way the future mark.
41:29.50 | Mark | Chauffeurs staff having having staff on hand to drive you places. That's the future.
36:37.97 | Nick | With hot and gloves.
41:42.62 | faster_horses | Cars that we start kind of started this with you know and people think they just want electric cars but actually is the future even owning cars is it? Yeah yeah, is it subscription and I think um 1 of my favorites was ah.
36:56.84 | Nick | Yeah, it's subscriptions.
41:53.89 | Mark | Um, and um.
42:01.89 | faster_horses | Oh God What was it the swartzenegger film total recall and they had taxis in there with a robot driver and the robot. Yeah yeah, and you know I kind of think that's that's the future. You know can light small buses or a little.
37:12.67 | Nick | Ah, yeah, yeah, it spins his head round in his seat.
37:24.78 | Nick | So I think the way it's going is exactly like this and it's on record so when when I when I'm proven right in twenty to 30 years I can I can point back to this episode and say I knew all along so what what I reckon happen is it will be subscriptions. No 1 will own a car.
42:21.70 | faster_horses | Often.
42:25.64 | faster_horses | Ah, yeah, yeah, this is.
42:35.56 | faster_horses | Barrier.
37:43.67 | Nick | And you'll just ah, it'll be more or less the same as Uber but there'll be self-drive and you'll subscribe to a car manufacturer so that that ability to seem. Um.
42:42.47 | faster_horses | Yeah, yeah.
37:55.75 | Nick | To seem exclusive and to seem like you know people. It's a status thing if you're driving around into a land drove or a mercedes or something like that. There's a certain amount of status attached to that and people will still want that so that comes from which subscription you have. So if you subscribe to mercedes a mercedes will pick you up and you can even.
42:56.30 | faster_horses | Yeah here.
43:10.64 | faster_horses | Day. Yeah, yeah.
38:14.88 | Nick | Within that subscription pick the level of of car that you want because you know missedes even have have classes and and and levels of like quality and under their brand. So I reckon that will be what it is and from month to month you can change your subscription price and get different levels of cars and comfort.
43:23.37 | faster_horses | Yeah, yeah, definitely.
38:32.50 | Nick | And it's It's even happening a little bit now for electric cars I think our good friend James Mad has subscribed or has previously subscribed to like an electric car monthly subscription. In fact, is your plan a little bit like that Paul on yours.
43:28.96 | faster_horses | Death.
43:34.26 | faster_horses | Yeah, yeah, it is a bit. Yeah, it is a bit I'm um, in fact, most cars are like that Anyway, you get Ptp don't you so you it? Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
38:50.99 | Nick | Yeah, but the subscriptions you can literally just you sign up for a month and that's it and you can switch the the ability to switch is you know like a big big thing for people.
43:52.74 | faster_horses | Definitely yeah.
43:53.99 | Mark | I think I think personally that the way that we ought to go with the technological advancement of cities and urban spaces in general and you know the the impending population problem where we might reach 20 billion before we plateau.
44:11.17 | faster_horses | Yeah.
44:13.32 | Mark | Is that we won't have space for cars at Allll because we we're building on an existing infrastructure that's going to be very difficult to tear up and and move around. Um so I think we're going to have to be far more efficient at about our use of space than a car subscription. I mean if you think there's ah, there's nifty infographics here and there about the actual real estate that people take up on different public transport as if theyre sat there and someone to remove the the car and they're still hovering in Ups beds and it just um I just think that they.
44:42.46 | faster_horses | Yeah, yeah.
44:49.83 | Mark | There's going to be methods of moving around like the not not literally like just the caveat but like the teleportation tubes in um, in future armor. Yeah yeah, but there's going to be ways of moving around or indeed bringing services to us.
44:54.15 | faster_horses | Um, our future on. Yes.
45:07.70 | Mark | Meeting in the middle of dedicated spaces that just completely um, revolutionized the way that we travel fullstop and I think part of that is actually going to be the obsolescence of the car because they just they carry usually carry 1 or 2 people.
45:08.80 | faster_horses | Oh.
45:24.40 | faster_horses | There? yeah.
45:26.31 | Mark | Ah, it's very rare. You see people in the back of a car but they take up what 1 I don't know what your average squarespace. Um square metre spitter space of ah, a car is but they tech up are huge major affairs.
45:38.31 | faster_horses | The tik of about yeah 20 people crammed in I reckon you could fit in a foot the foot. Ah what's it called the a foots of foot space of a car the the square footage square meters.
45:43.88 | Mark | Yeah.
45:47.69 | Mark | The footwells.
45:57.40 | Mark | For print. Yeah.
45:57.41 | faster_horses | A car footage I know footprint. That's the word. Yeah, ah yeah, um, but yeah, you can fit in loads of people on there. But yeah, it's weird isn't it. It's weird and we still think like this and is that just yeah corporates Tiny kind of like so.
41:01.94 | Nick | Foot footage.
46:16.77 | faster_horses | Take our money and things like this and and and he you know can like they talk about transport problems and things like that and actually I think the the 1 1 positive of the pandemic is that um you know we've we've rethought.
41:22.47 | Nick | Um, yes.
46:32.80 | faster_horses | How we meet people and you know can like meet people for a coffee is a real luxury nowadays and you know you give a lot more kind of like zoom or teams calls and and getting that you know and you can do that You know you can meet 20 people. Um, rather than kind of like you know traveling getting stuck in traffic for an hour fan in soueta park getting to the coffee shop doing the same thing back and stuff like that. But yeah, it's weird isn't it. It's weird. But so I think we're slowly moving on I think the pandemic has eased us onto that. Um, and you know what? if we asked the pandemic. What why?? what? I thought they'd say more viruses.
47:20.10 | Mark | Yeah, yeah, must the viruses.
47:25.10 | faster_horses | Ah, more faceless low year though anyway, um enough faster horses will post some links and of the things out in the chat below and stuff like that. Ah.
42:32.38 | Nick | Jesus I of bear thinking about is it.
47:28.46 | Mark | Um, yeah.
42:45.67 | Nick | And on to air.
47:42.74 | faster_horses | Get in touch if you want to know more and hopefully that's giving you a good insight Why we you know we're We're not that shallow naming of a podcast. We've got some deep thought behind it ah and a lot of anger. Ah, yeah, yeah.
42:58.78 | Nick | And a lot of anger as well.
47:55.80 | Mark | I Think that comes across to the general tone of our podcasts to the ice.
43:04.85 | Nick | Yeah, very bitter.
48:02.60 | faster_horses | Um, yeah, my wife says good. She sound like a real old the old whining man. Ah, all of us all of us here. Yeah, the area cool Anyway, who's got the um.
48:05.95 | Mark | Yeah, yeah.
43:13.00 | Nick | Oh me, Ah I'm happy with that. That's a that's a cul eed brand of mine. So I'm glad she's picking that up.
48:13.43 | Mark | Um, yeah, yeah.
48:21.16 | faster_horses | The magic tumbbola this week you could it. We do need to do a song. Yeah join john an intro.
48:23.49 | Mark | Oh yes, oh yes I forgot about this.
43:29.25 | Nick | I've got it I would do we need to do a song first. Oh god yeah go a oh its my a ring entry music weigh a hundred and eighty seven pounds.
48:32.50 | faster_horses | Ah, yeah, yeah of.
48:32.34 | Mark | Yeah. Um, um I have no idea out loud.
48:40.20 | faster_horses | Ah, ah, you have gone.
43:46.13 | Nick | Um, got we I dont know much that is I do stone so that might be whereless and I wear ah right? So you ex a Bowlla what you go to do with their big tumbboer machine falls on you and breaks your arm.
48:54.80 | Mark | Did it do I Just thought I needed that bit of symmetry rhymed like poetry.
48:56.74 | faster_horses | Ah, love it. Amazing! amazing.
44:09.69 | Nick | I liked it right? Give it a crank sorry I don't know that a fuck off alexa.
49:07.73 | faster_horses | Yeah, yeah, let's do it. Ah here we go? yeah.
49:17.60 | Mark | Secretly she's running the tambola machine right.
49:23.54 | faster_horses | Or there we go come on spin a bit faster next time nick.
49:28.81 | Mark | Um, yeah, fucking El and this is and with you were you ex tummoler on tumbbo of fucking machines.
44:37.78 | Nick | What the fuck is going on.
49:34.87 | faster_horses | Ah, just fiting minute. It stop spending it ah gods. Yeah right.
44:48.74 | Nick | This is what purgatory is. It's just spinning the tumbbola machine forever. Um, so today's tumbbo the subject is emos.
49:46.82 | faster_horses | Um, oh oh like this? um, are we talking about the emoji film because I think that the.
49:53.57 | Mark | Um, who so I No, we're not never talking about the Emoji film Patrick Stewart is in that which is very disappointing as a poo.
45:08.59 | Nick | We will. We will not be talking about the emoji fill.
50:06.64 | faster_horses | Thank you good I Know yeah that was a good good. Yeah yeah, ah yeah, is Patrick Patrick I've got a role for you. It's and and yeah.
50:12.93 | Mark | Which scathing indictment against his career. Yeah yeah.
45:18.65 | Nick | Says it earlier isn't it.
45:27.23 | Nick | I've got the role. You've been waiting for your entire life. Forget Picard Forget Charles Xavier you're a shit. Yes, but what's the role.
50:23.64 | Mark | Um, are very good Very droll Sorry Patrick And yeah, yeah, no I think.
50:25.19 | faster_horses | Ah, yeah. Ah.
45:44.34 | Nick | Right? Take it away from on what what.
50:43.41 | Mark | I was so I Never really appreciated emojis till recently and I do think there's a real art to using emojis. Um, and I think it comes back to the fact that and a lot of people don't recognize this because. Moment they recognize it. They'd realize they were at fault for most of the arguments they have and and it's their fault that those arguments exist. Um, so yeah, yeah, no, no, um, but that what people don't realize is when you are reading.
51:06.87 | faster_horses | Um, and she words mark.
51:17.36 | Mark | A text what you are associating that text with is not a person. Not a human being but the concept you have of that person within your own head and thus that gets intermingled ah with whatever personal sentiment. You have whatever insecurity. Whatever. Ah, problems you're facing whatever you're projecting and so every time you read a text you are appropriating that to an idea of what you have in your head and you will go out of your way to make if you're feeling pissed off at a person to interpret.
46:59.14 | Nick | Um.
51:56.46 | Mark | They're nice messages as something that pisses you off and I think emojis are 1 small way of mitigating that only small because you know we can interpret emojis differently as well.
47:14.23 | Nick | Yeah, well, that's my favorite thing about emojis that there were there was actually clear intention behind quite a lot of those emojis and and also on the other end of the scale just an inclusion of a completely Bizarre icon for for no discernible reason.
52:14.70 | faster_horses | You hang up.
47:33.10 | Nick | And pretty much every emoji has now a socially understood like meaning so like you know the ah the orbiine is somewhat phallic isn't it and that has become if you put an orbergine in ah in a message.
52:33.00 | faster_horses | Tab.
52:39.30 | Mark | It says.
52:46.13 | faster_horses | Um, yeah, yeah.
47:50.87 | Nick | That's like that could be potentially like a saccable offense depending on the kind you know, depending on where you're doing it which is incredibly I find incredibly interesting and then you know there's um.
52:47.90 | Mark | Thus yeah.
48:04.40 | Nick | There's a emergrges that seem to mean 1 thing or we're intended for 1 purpose that have have become completely different.
53:02.60 | faster_horses | Yeah, yeah, definitely I think it's we were talking about this on our Mvp episode. So um, if you go back and listen to that wordless. Um, but you know it's that common language isn't it an emojis become its own language.
53:08.49 | Mark | Um, and.
53:21.76 | faster_horses | But like regional languages have their own inflections and different meanings and things like that. So do emojis as well. So you know 1 thing I always kind of dislike about emojis is the what.
53:30.57 | Mark | Are are.
53:39.75 | faster_horses | I'm always kind of like searching for the right emoji for the right time and kind of like I always think as well. On social media am I going to insult somebody if I put a a male representation of this emoji here I'm or kind of a female 1
53:42.60 | Mark | Move up.
53:56.57 | faster_horses | Is it the right audience and those kind of it I end up second guessing it so it takes him about 2 years to write something ah because I'm thinking I all am I being social but all I wanted and were a.
54:07.22 | Mark | But but go back to the point I just made there poll they're going to interpret that willingly. However, they want to.
54:16.32 | faster_horses | Exactly exactly? yeah and I'm I'm secondguessing all these interpretations all I wanted is someone to go out to the supermarket and buy me a bloody obra Gene for tea. Ah so you know? yeah.
49:21.33 | Nick | Yeah, regardless.
54:24.35 | Mark | That yeah yeah. But you know Twitter's word count is still even though they doubled it. It's still difficult to describe that scenario without using the emoji instead of the word or Machine. So I have tell them opportunity now because um.
54:35.94 | faster_horses | Yeah, ah. Yeah.
49:45.83 | Nick | I don't know spell or gene so you know so that helps but guest see that's that's a benefit of emojis like for people people who can't read and write maybe as well as other people an emoji Actually it's.
54:45.11 | faster_horses | Um, yeah, Oh yeah, yeah. Um, yeah, yeah.
50:03.29 | Nick | Solves a problem there done it. You don't know to spell ramen but you can find the emoji you know what? it looks like.
55:02.42 | faster_horses | Definitely unless you pick the wrong 1 and pick the spaghetti by accident and a nullo the yeah yeah, and but yeah in in terms of.
55:03.29 | Mark | Outset copy four.
50:11.48 | Nick | Ah, spagtti spaghetti is is just ramen. That's gotten out of the hot tub.
55:11.80 | Mark | Is no.
55:16.94 | faster_horses | But though you can communicate entirely in emojis can't you and and that is 1 1 of the massive advantages. So if you went to a different country. You could actually you know quite succinctly communicate with somebody who doesn't speak the same language.
50:24.79 | Nick | Um, yeah, yeah.
50:35.39 | Nick | Well yeah, you could. But again that that raises question so there's ah, there's something. Um, there's an emoji that a lot of people use in England which if you look on the emoji keyboard if I describe it. It's like a white.
55:44.56 | faster_horses | Are.
50:53.22 | Nick | Starship with a pink swirl in the middle and a lot of people use that a moreja as like set dressing and like sparkles and like you know like a like a firework kind of looking thing in Japan as a fish kick you put it in food.
55:55.38 | Mark | Um, get that.
55:55.79 | faster_horses | Oh yeah.
51:08.98 | Nick | And it's got no as far as away no connotation other than you put it in Rahman but in england people have got no concept of what that is and and just assume they know what it is and start using it for different things which is quite interesting.
56:10.58 | faster_horses | So yeah, definitely.
56:13.49 | Mark | Yeah I think that that would be really interested to examine like um, how different geographies are even you know within um within a nation never mind globally. But how they interpret different emerges. And how they use them I remember um seeing some I was just going to call them an optimist because they were and they were celebrating um something and it came out as this big long paragraph. And every single after every single word which with emoji associated with it. There had put 1 of those emojis and I have to say it was exhausting to go through that path. There is something difficult to read about it. Not not in the sense of um.
52:01.88 | Nick | Ah, hear that hear that. Yeah.
57:10.48 | Mark | You know legibility. But in the sense of of having to pause to interpret what an emoji means and and how it's how it's ah affecting the tone of a conversation. Um I remember I've done this a couple of times. Um I've put indeed. At the end of a long conversation and realized oh shit that sounds like I'm being really dismissive there I edit the comment put a happy little emoji there and it turns all of a sudden from indeed to I agree with you? Um, which.
52:43.43 | Nick | Um, yeah.
57:43.37 | faster_horses | Ah, which is different.
57:47.00 | Mark | Yeah, yeah, absolutely and I got called out for my sneaky emoji use but you know that's diplomacy Now that's it.
52:58.10 | Nick | Yeah, you can literally it's the difference between slate like it's the difference between a state A statement of fact at face value and like an ironic statement in which you mean the complete opposite. You just put a laugh in fit Face Emoji at the end of it and people know that you.
58:06.50 | Mark | On a phone.
58:06.76 | faster_horses | Yeah, yeah.
53:16.23 | Nick | You mean actually the opposite of what you just said or like a smirking face or an eye roll or something like that which without it people. The interpretation could be up for discussion.
58:13.62 | faster_horses | Yeah.
58:19.34 | Mark | That's it. It reminds me a lot of stage directions. So ah, well that said you might have in a stage direction. Um.
58:23.81 | faster_horses | Where I yeah.
53:29.12 | Nick | You have to explain that 1
58:33.29 | Mark | Because I include the tone with which something's spoken. So so you'll have square bracket with Anger close square bracket and then you in it not not and then you move to the end of the table. Yeah changedd off screen by a bear there.
53:40.88 | Nick | Yeah, all right see not right? okay.
58:41.80 | faster_horses | I'll tell you? Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah I did yeah.
53:53.27 | Nick | Exit Stage left.
58:53.60 | Mark | Um, which is in ah, it's in yeah, it's in a shakespeare player with no context whatsoever is just chased off by a bear. Um.
53:59.84 | Nick | Is it some shakespearean thing not now it's it says didn't it say chased off stage left by a bear or something like that. Yeah I know.
59:00.86 | faster_horses | Why not.
59:08.65 | Mark | I'm not sure the exact. Um, there's probably an em Moji for it now though.
54:17.30 | Nick | Yeah, I'm familiar with that.
59:13.36 | faster_horses | That's only because so shakespeare found a bear costume in the Hilton hotel in the town london which so.
59:16.60 | Mark | Yeah, yeah, that's it. That's no same with is a bonny looking Buggger Egg though four hundred and oh I old busy he four hundred and something. Yeah yeah, Billy Whiz what.
59:26.86 | faster_horses | Hello. Yeah.
54:33.10 | Nick | William Shakespeare is Dead Mark is dead.
59:33.93 | Mark | And why have I agreed to sleep with him.
59:35.50 | faster_horses | Ah, to descend you an emoji proposition. Ah.
59:38.18 | Mark | Ah, do yeah yeah I I clearly misinterpreted that. Yeah.
54:48.27 | Nick | Just a smi in fairs Tower of London Surky face be geneo. Yeah.
59:49.75 | faster_horses | Ah, Sco school. Ah.
59:54.37 | Mark | Um, yeah, you can get now you can get like stocking filler books which our page is like little quizzes.
55:04.92 | Nick | How's Yoric skull emerging.
01:00:09.45 | faster_horses | Yeah, 3
01:00:09.77 | Mark | It guess the story from the set of emojis are guess Theay guess of prayers. Yeah I think um.
55:17.39 | Nick | Ah, that big good quiz thing on it how we can. How are we going to come up with a product that Mark steeler can advertise.
01:00:20.00 | Mark | Um, yeah, what? Well we've not. We've just talked about the use of emojis. We're not solutionized around them.
01:00:21.80 | faster_horses | I think.
55:31.89 | Nick | No, so the I guess 1 issue with emojis is you've got to be able to see them and yeah, although although um, text to speech does pick them up.
01:00:31.59 | Mark | Yes.
01:00:35.60 | faster_horses | Gay any. And yeah.
01:00:36.30 | Mark | Well well my my thinking is is emojis have become so expansive now there must. There are hundreds of them but the human face is only limited to that first page. So when you're meeting him. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:00:44.46 | faster_horses | Oh yeah, yeah.
01:00:50.44 | faster_horses | Um, yeah, true.
55:56.69 | Nick | Yeah, the most expressive tool on earth.
01:00:55.98 | Mark | When you're meeting in person Now you are not able. You're no longer able to leverage that functionality. So I wonder if we can introduce some kind of face mask and that that.
01:01:10.28 | faster_horses | Okay, yeah, yeah.
56:14.37 | Nick | That just as a morrge is on it. That's a thing that's the thing that's just been released I was going to get 1 for Halloween it's it's a mask with a battery pack in it that connects to an app on your phone with an led screen and you can put anything you want on this led screen.
01:01:22.24 | faster_horses | Um, nice. Well yeah, ah.
01:01:26.50 | Mark | So I see Mark steel is already on that 1 then never mind next feddocks.
56:30.62 | Nick | And they're like relatively inexpensive like less than 50 quid. Yeah may I mean maybe you know you ext tombola we don't always have to come up with a solution sometimes we talk about thing that just has good ux already. So maybe.
01:01:37.39 | faster_horses | But.
01:01:40.15 | Mark | Um, well I think that's what emojis are over.
01:01:42.29 | faster_horses | Ah, yeah I.
56:50.51 | Nick | Yeah, yeah, so maybe maybe Mark steeler just needs to come in and advertise the emoji language to people and maybe maybe maybe convince people to make the switch from the english um Roman alphabet is it roman roman alphabet.
01:01:49.89 | Mark | Oh how.
01:01:59.62 | Mark | Um, yeah, show.
01:02:00.63 | faster_horses | What what? I'd like to see Mark steeler advertise is the sema for version of emojis. Ah, yeah, yeah.
57:09.86 | Nick | No, that doesn't that doesn't sound right line No, but she not the real life. Not right? Okay, no, this is it I've got it to to the product is a large um, hard shelled.

57:29.93 | Nick | Suitcase with a real world version of every emoji in it see you've got like a little model airplane a toy bought and an obergine and ebola. Um, and it's all in there and you've just got to like leaf through it whenever you want it. So.
01:02:26.50 | Mark | And.
01:02:28.66 | faster_horses | Ah, love it.
01:02:31.27 | Mark | Ah, ah.
01:02:41.74 | faster_horses | That's pretty much I do with emojis anyway.
01:02:42.20 | Mark | You getting that.
57:49.40 | Nick | So like you be you be in a bar with it with you. Um, suitcase next year and you'd be like would you like to come to my house tonight and then you just pull out the eggplant the abergine and just kind of stand there with it. So that's it. So it's a.
